Sport Tracker

Overview

Nokia Sports Tracker is a GPS based activity tracker that runs on S60 smartphones. Information such as speed, distance and time are automatically stored to your training diary. To be able to use application for real, you need Nokia S60 3.0 or 3.1 phone with Bluetooth GPS device or Nokia S60 3.0 or 3.1 phone with integrated GPS.

FAQ

1. Which Bluetooth GPS devices are supported?

The application has been tested with Nokia Bluetooth GPS modules (we recommend Nokia LD-4W), but any Bluetooth enabled GPS module known to work with your phone should work. Most of the GPS modules have been designed primarily for car navigation use, therefore their performance in low speed (e.g. walking) may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.
2. How do I install the application?

There are two options: a) use phone browser to access this page and click installation link at the bottom of the page or b) download the installation package to your computer and perform the installation using PC Suite
3. My track plot has odd jumps and/or the measured distance seems to be too big.

Some GPS receiver are more susceptible to positioning signal strength variations than others. Poor visibility to satellites may cause the calculated position to wonder around, increasing the apparent traveled distance. The situation can be especially challenging in urban canyons (tall buildings blocking the satellite view). User should position the GPS device so that it has clear view to the sky.
4. What phone models are compatible with the application?

List of compatible phones is next to the download link below. The application is compatible with latest Nokia S60 3rd edition phones, such as N71, N73, N75, N76, N80, N80ie, N91, N92, N93, N93i, N95, E50, E60, E61, E61i, E62, E65, E70, E90, 3250, 5500 Sport, 6290, 6110 Navigator.
5. Can I see the recorded workout on a map?

Currently the application does not contain any map content; stay tuned for an update. If you want to see your recorded track on the map, you can export the workout to a file in KML format (in workout summary choose Options->Save as->Export to Google Earth) that can be visualized using 3rd party applications, such as "Google Earth". Example screenshots below, satellite imagery shown is copyrighted by Google.
Here's an example how generated KML files can be visualized using a web browser: sample view. KML file shown can be downloaded from here: Example.kml.

Activity Monitor

Overview

The Nokia Activity Monitor displays charts and statistics, in real-time, about your movements while walking or running. It counts the number of steps, and determines the distance covered and the energy expenditure. Summaries are stored in a diary so that you can compare your activity level on different days, and over longer periods of time. Your steps are detected by analysing the output from the accelerometer in an S60 smart phone. It is most accurate when you attach the phone to your belt, or upper arm, and it also works well if carry your phone in a pocket of your clothing. It might underestimate the number of steps if you keep the phone in a bag that you hold in your hand (as opposed to over your shoulder), and the most difficult case is when you hold the phone in your hand. Inevitably, false steps are detected sometimes, for example when you are cycling or driving.

The Activity Monitor currently runs on the N95, N95 8GB, and N82. You must have a memory card in your phone for the application to work. Be aware that the Activity Monitor's use of the accelerometer requires a fair amount of battery power. It does not shut down gracefully when the voltage drops, so keep an eye on the battery indicator during the day, and don't forget to stop the Activity Monitor before you go to bed! Your feedback is greatly appreciated, so please use the contact forms on this page to send us your impressions.

Please read and accept the 2-page "End User Software Agreement" before downloading the Activity Monitor application.

Click the link below to download the Activity Monitor installation package version 0.11 for the Nokia N95, N95 8GB, and N82. The package is self-contained and you do not need to install or copy additional files (the R&D Accelerometer plugin is not necessary). Version 0.11 solves the problems with installation of version 0.09 and the Sports Tracker on the same device.

User Guide

When you start the application you see four main menu items: Start, Diary, Progress, and Settings. If you are using the Activity Monitor for the first time, go to Settings -> User, and enter your name, age, gender, height, and weight (height and weight are used for estimating distance and energy expenditure). The Start item launches the step counter which then runs until you explicitly select Stop. By scrolling up and down you toggle between displays for the current workout and for the current day.
Screenshot, main menu Screenshot, main screen Screenshot, main screen summary

The Diary item displays statistics for different days. The recorded workouts are indicated by small coloured bars in the Calendar view, and a popup message lists the step count, energy expenditure, and distance for the highlighted date. When you select a particular date, you see a summary screen that presents the same information as the popup message. If you select 'Options' in the summary view, you can use the menu 'Individual workouts' to look at the data recorded in separate sessions rather than the daily total. You can also use 'Individual workouts' to delete data. The up and down cursor keys takes you from the summary view to two graphical displays. One shows the intensity of your activity (based on the step frequency) and the other shows the accumulated number of steps. The left and right cursor keys moves to the previous- and next day, or workout, regardless of which of the three views is currently displayed.
Screenshot, diary Screenshot, diary summary Screenshot, diary intensity Screenshot, diary accumulated steps

The Progress item displays statistics for different weeks. The summary view lists the step count, energy expenditure, and distance for the currently selected week. The up and down cursor keys takes you from the summary view to two graphical displays. One shows the step count for each day of the week and the other shows the step count for the current week as well as the previous three weeks. The left and right cursor keys moves to the previous- and next week regardless of which of the three views is currently displayed.

There are some options, which are not described here, inside the menus so you might want to spend a little time experimenting with the application to find out what else it can do!

N95 RD Accelerometer Plug-in

In a later N95 firmware release you should be able to access the raw accelerometer data by using the official sensor plug-in downloadable from Forum Nokia (Sensor Plug-in for 60 3rd Edition).

As a by-product of Activity Monitor research we have developed accelerometer software plug-in for Nokia N95. It enables receiving raw accelerometer data from the phone's inbuilt tri-axis accelerometer. The plug-in is a C++ software library, which can be used with publicly available S60 platform SDK's. Be aware that the plug-in software is not an official release. It is meant is meant for research and development purposes only. Please read and accept the 2-page "End User Software Agreement" before downloading the plug-in. Installation and usage instructions can be found in package's Readme.txt file.

NokiaFree Unlock Codes Calculator 3.1

Now you can use your mobile phone with any service provider around the world. Functions: Repair, remove sim restrictions, and unlock Nokia, Samsung, Siemens, Maxon, NEC, Sony, Panasonic, Vitel, AEG/Telital, Alcatel cell phones. How to use: You only need to enter IMEI, to get IMEI number you must press *#06# at your mobile phone keyboard and enter. To unlock Nokia mobile phones you should select the operator company where you bought your cell phone.

Version 3.1 adds 'Model auto-select' feature, 'Nokia Expert' option, and improves Nokia 6620/5140 support.

So you bought a used cell phone, only to find out it doesn't work with your network provider. Tragedy? Not necessarily. NokiaFree Unlock Codes Calculator may be able to bring that recalcitrant mobile around. While this ad-supported utility is primarily targeted at Nokia phones, in theory it lets you unlock other mobile devices as well. It all depends on whether yours appears on the program's sadly outdated lists of network providers and phone models. On the aesthetic side, the interface is full of ugly buttons, and the tray icon is primitive and clumsy. The feature set appears quite rich, though the interface uses several terms that might intimidate novice users. The installation process is very clean, fast, and transparent, and the program itself is quite stable. The annoying ad banner at the bottom of the screen doesn't inhibit the program's functionality. NokiaFree Unlock Codes Calculator is no slam dunk, but with patience and a bit of luck, it'll turn that inert lump of metal and plastic into a ringing, texting, calling machine.

FIFA08 for N-Gage free giveaway in Europe

Nokia are giving away FIFA08 for N-Gage-compatible phones absolutely free to a limited number of people in Europe (we don't know the exact figure but it's in the thousands at least). It's on a first-come-first-served basis, so the quicker you act the more likely you are to get the game free. The most reliable way of getting the game free is to install the FIFA08 demo directly on your phone in the N-Gage application, then go to the special N-Gage Play site (play.n-gage.com) on your computer's browser to get the activation link sent to your ...... Symbia Getting Started with Symbian C++

Firstly, get the 'Series 60' Symbian C++ SDK from http://forum.nokia.com (you will need to register on the site). The download is around 128MB so be warned. I had it downloaded by my friend (cable) and burnt onto CD.

Next thing to do is to install this on your PC, if you wish to use the Visual C++ IDE or the emulator then you should have VC6 installed. (You can compile for 'the phone alone' with the command line without VC6).

This install will also install a Java Runtime environment (1.3 I Think). It will also install ActivePerl for running some compile scripts etc. It will also install a so called 'emulator' for the N7650.

Take a look at the documentation available, especially the segments regarding getting started etc.. If you are new to Object Oriented Programming (or need to brush up) there is a good section on getting your basics right.

--- Edited
The first version of a miniguide to getting started is now available in text form below.

The first revision (1.1) of a miniguide is now available, it has updated sections on compiling for the phone as well as a clarification on using VC6.

Revised.
1. Added info on emulator.
2. Added clarification on VC6.
3. Added clarification for 'Series 60' SDK. This is the one I am using.

Revised.
1. Added Miniguide.
2. Added link to 'Problems getting started'.

Revised.
1. Corrected statement on VC6 requirement.
2. Uploaded revision 1.1. Will keep revision 1 until rev 1.2 or more comes along. :-)
Rev 1.1, adds section on compiling for the phone and sis file creation.

TIP!!: You can run the script 'Series60\Epoc32\Data\change_7650_skin.pl' to make the emulator look like 7650 (recommended only for 1028x768 screens though)

Reposted the Miniguide rev 1.1 since it was unavailable after the host change.. (I know it has been a few weeks since, but I was moving to Sydney :-) )

Reposted the Miniguide after complaints that it wasnt available. Sorry for the delay.

For C++ development, first decide which IDE (Integrated Development Environment) you want to use: CodeWarrior, Borland C++ Builder/BuilderX or Microsoft Visual Studio.

You can also develop without an IDE, but then you can only use command line tools and can't use the PC based emulator, but must always compile for the device and debug without asy source code debugging.

If you have a 6600, use SDKs for Series 60 2nd Edition or 2.0. Without any "Feature Packs".

Also, buy a book such as this one to get up to speed faster: http://forum.nokia.com/main/1,6566,40_2,00.html

Install a Personal Security Cerificate

Question:
How do I install a Personal Security Cerificate in N91 ? What format does N91 Support ? And how do I export the certificate in that format from the PC ?

Answer:
The N91 supports the DER/CER format.

1) Get a .CER (the certificate) file
2) Using PCSuite, copy that .CER file to your phone in any folder really. Documents will work
3) Using FileManager on your phone, navigate to the file, and you should be able to "open" it, and then it will say do you want to import it

Question:
These certificates you talk, are validation codes, to use in e-mail, when comunicate with autorities, or private organizations, like the ones used in Outlook - on a PC? Digital signatures? Is that?

Answer:
Certificates are for security and yes they are about communicating identity (it's a bit more than that, but I'm not an expert). S60 has a lot of these preinstalled (e.g. the ones used on many SSL websites), but sometimes people need to add thier own. The most common is for email servers.

Questions swirl around Mac clone maker Psystar

The Psystar Open Computer, the source of a huge Internet kerfuffle this week.

The more we learn about Mac clone maker Psystar, the more questions arise.

For those of you who missed it, the interest of the Mac world this week swung from 3G iPhone rumor-mongering to South Florida, where a company called Psystar has put up a Web site selling a product called an Open Computer. The product is essentially a white-box Mac with Mac OS X Leopard preinstalled, and a violation of Apple's licensing agreement for Mac OS X.

The Guardian did a little digging Tuesday into some of the basics around Psystar, such as its exact location and ownership. The company's main business appears to be IT consulting for small and medium-size businesses, such as setting up networks and telecom equipment and providing technical support.

The psystar.com domain name was registered in 2000, according to a Whois search, but the site does not appear to have been active before this past weekend, when news of its existence flooded the Internet. The domain is registered to Rodolfo Pedraza of Miami, who is probably the Rudy Pedraza who spoke to Ars Technica about his company on Tuesday.

According to Florida business records (PDF), Psystar was registered as a company on July 6, 2007, at 10645 SW 112th Street in Miami, a residential neighborhood in the Olympia Heights (2:05pm - Sorry, wrong neighborhood) area south of the city center. That was the address listed on Psystar's contact page on Monday, but at some point on Tuesday, Psystar changed its official address to 10481 NW 28th Street, a commercial district near Miami International Airport.

Several Gizmodo readers went to both addresses on Wednesday, and found no trace of any company named Psystar. A CNET News.com reader wrote in Tuesday night pointing out that a screen-printing company called CottonImages.com lists their address as 10481 NW 28th Street.

A spokesman for Cottonimages.com denied any knowledge of Psystar to Computerworld on Wednesday, and said no company by that name was located at their address. UPDATED 1:30 p.m. PDT--Gizmodo notes that Psystar's address has changed again, this time to 10471 NW 28th Street. Maybe the 10481 address was just a typo, but it's not clear. UPDATED 4:25 pm--Believe it or not, they changed it again. Psystar is now located at 10475 NW 28th Street. This is really weird.

I tried to call Psystar executives Wednesday morning and was directed to submit any questions to an e-mail address at Psystar. The company doesn't appear to have been prepared for the onslaught of attention following the discovery of the Open Computer on its Web site, as its online store was briefly down Wednesday morning. It's now back up and taking orders.

Perhaps foolishly, once the Web store came back online I placed an order for an Open Computer with Leopard preinstalled. I got the basic model for $554.99, although they kill you on shipping with a $93.41 shipping and handling fee for UPS Three-Day Select.

A gentleman who answered the "sales" extension at Psystar's toll-free number told me there is a 7- to 8-day build time right now for the Open Computer. When I asked him what accounted for the delay, he said the company had received many orders in the past few days. He also said he had only started at the company a few days ago.

In other Psystar news, the developer who created the firmware emulator that allows the Open Computer to bypass Apple's restrictions on Mac OS X is peeved that the company is using his technology without his permission.

Netkas, who created the EFI v8 emulator, says he released the software under a strict noncommercial license. For a while, Psystar had not even acknowledged his contribution, but the company has added an "open source" section to its site noting his authorship of the EFI v8 emulator and saying, "Psystar will promote Open Source projects in every way possible."

Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that the author of software that is designed to violate a company's licensing agreement is annoyed that another company is using that software in violation of his own licensing agreement?

Anyway, that's the latest with Psystar. I'll update this post later if I get a response to my e-mailed questions, or if anything else surfaces.
