Symella is a Gnutella file-sharing client for Symbian smartphones. Currently, it is available for mobile devices based on the S60 Platform 2nd and 3rd edition.
Symella supports multi-threaded downloads which means that if multiple users have a particular file then Symella can download the file from several locations simultenously.
Symella is free (and open source) software, distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. We highly appreciate any help. If you like this software and want to support the development of Symella by making a donation, you can do so via PayPal.
You should also check out our other popular mobile file-sharing application, SymTorrent, a BitTorrent client for Symbian OS.

Just as the discussion board of SymTorrent, the forum of Symella is also down. Unfortunately, it seems that our free forum service provider (jconserv) has given up hosting for good. I will try to come up with a new solution as soon as possible.

The previous certificate, which we used to sign Symella, has expired. This caused that you were not able to install the prebuilt (SIS) version. I have rebuilt Symella 1.40 with a new certificate, and now it sould be valid for another year. Please download the latest version if you had problems installing the application.

Mobile Phone Programming Symella and SymTorrent are featured in a new book: Mobile Phone Programming and its Application to Wireless Networking. The chapter written by us covers Peer-to-peer file sharing on mobile devices. We discuss the basics of Gnutella and BitTorrent and then show how they can be applied in a mobile environment. Some code examples which demonstrate SymTorrent's class library are also present in the book.

Symella 1.40 is released. I've added the long awaited "default network connection setting", hopefully it will solve the popping up access point dialog issue. The webcache support has also been improved. Symella queries the caches for addresses of other webcaches and you can edit the list of webcache addresses manually through the settings as well. Please don't forget to share your opinion about the new relase in our discussion board.

It seems that almost all Gnutella web caches have gone offline recently and therefore Symella isn't able to connect to the network. I'm working on the issue and hopefully a fixed version will be released in a couple of days. If you want to speed up things, please consider supporting the project.

Symella 1.32 for S60 platform 3rd and 2nd edition has been released! I've added a "find box" to the search results list (it can be used to filter the search results based on a given word) plus made some fixes to the UI.
We also have a new discussion board!

Symella for S60 3rd edition is now available for download. We fixed several bugs and refined the UI as well. The application has been tested on Nokia N80 and N91 phones.
Sorry for the long delay but we have been very busy with some other projects. As you can see, the webpage has been moved to our department's portal. Perhaps the layout is not the best one but we had no other choice, and here at least all of our projects can be found at the same place. We are going to add a forum and, if the demand is high enough, other features as well.
